Today there are some 5000 children in Rwanda living in orphanages, just 5000 out of an estimated 400,000 orphaned children living throughout the country. In fact Rwanda has one of the highest orphan populations in the world. The reasons for this have been explored elsewhere on this site. We no longer have orphanages in the United Kingdom. Children who have no parents able to care for them live with relatives, foster carers or adoptive carers. A small number live in children's homes until they are ready to make their own way in the world with support and guidance from professional staff, and even those living in home, tend to end up back with their families.

It is therefore hard to imagine life in an orphanage for years on end, knowing that its not a matter of waiting for new parents to come forward, for there are none, and also knowing that the future is bleak once its time to leave the care of the orphanage with no home to go to and little prospect of finding work to support and provide for your life.
