Madagascar should be a paradise. A beautiful island teaming with a unique variety of wildlife and fauna with rich rainforests and a stunning coastline in a strategic position between Africa and the Indies. Yet despite all of this, Madagascar is a country in economic and political crisis following decades of instability after it gained its independence.
There are many facts about Madagascar of concern. Its high child death rates, its poor education system, its lack of water and proper sanitation resulting in serious health issues, the number of children begging on the streets of its urban areas, the millions of kids taken out of education to help families survive as agencies suspend humanitarian aid in response to the recent military coup.
Until this coup occurred, Madagascar was making some progress, if limited, towards its Millennium Development Goals. The annual growth rate of GDP was inching upwards going some way on the journey of eradicating hunger and poverty and overall enrolment in primary school improved although drop out rates remained high.
These small, but nevertheless significant steps have no doubt been derailed by the coup, however, if and when any new statistics will be available is not known in the current climate. Our about Madagascar pages highlight all these areas of concern, however, despite these challenges, it is only appropriate to also show positive images of the island republic as shown in this video. Yes, there are significant problems, many may take years to resolve, however never lose sight of Madagascar at its finest, as it should be.
