Lusaka Airport ~ Lusaka International Airport

Lusaka Airport

Lusaka International Airport, opened in 1967, is located about twenty minutes drive from Zambia's capital city Lusaka and serves as both a military and public airport. A number of airlines operate from there including Air Angola, Air Botswana, Air France, Air India, Air Malawi, Air Tanzania, Air Zimbabwe, British Airways, Kenya Airways, South African Airways and Zambezi Airlines, which replaced Zambian Airways (former Mine Air Services) the national airline of Zambia that ceased operation in 2009 after the EU Air Safety Committee refused permission from all Zambian airlines to operate services to the EU due to safety concerns.

Lusaka airport serves around a quarter of a million domestic passengers every year and a further million international passengers. Described as 'clean but old' by its passengers, unlike many other African airports, the staff are polite and friendly and there's no need to 'share' money to facilitate the visa processes. It received an upgrade in the mid 2000s when new escalators, lifts and check in counters were upgraded.
