Life in Sudan
Life for many of Sudan's population of 41 million is harsh. The country has suffered from years of civil war, and millions are displaced with many living in refugee camps both within and outside of the country. With a life expectancy of just over 52 years and AIDS/HIV rampant with many more dying from water related diseases, 80% of the population seeks out a living on the land although just 6.7% of it is arable.
Water is also a serious issue for children in southern Sudan in particular where small boreholes are the main source of water with people walking miles, then queuing for hours to get supplies of untreated water resulting in many suffering from bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A and E, and typhoid fever ~ all water related. The video clip above about water in Sudan is worth watching as access to water forms a key part of daily life in Sudan.
This video documentary explores daily rural life in Sudan as seen through the eyes of a Sudanese villager and provides clips of his village, Sudan's rural housing, but also for once, some video clips of happy, laughing children in Sudan. Although life seems basic and rudimentary, for many in Sudan life is not measured by the number of personal possessions you own.
