Lake Chad Shrinking
Around the size of the state of Vermont, Lake Chad is at the
heart of the lives of some nine million farmers, herders and
fisherman who live around it shore and who are dependent on its
health and very existence.
Today that existence is under threat
as a lack of monsoon rainfall has created an ever increasing
dependency on one of Africa's largest inland freshwater lakes.
The shrinking of Lake Chad can be seen in this video. As that shrinking continues unabated former fishermen now find that the lake has receded far from their villages and they have turned to farming as an alternative way of sustenance.
Many blame the west for pumping the air with chemicals creating climate change, however the historical record of Lake Chad suggests that it has undergone many such shrinkages in the last thousand years, long before industrialisation.
