What is now known as Kenya was explored by the Portuguese during the late fifteenth century, who set up trading stations there en route to India and Asia. During the 17th Century both the English and Dutch started moving into the area together with the Omani Arab, however this latter group was repelled by the English and Germans during the 1880s.
1895 saw the formation of the British East African
Protectorate and the ensuing years saw white settlers moving
into the highland areas along with the construction of the
railway from Mombassa to Lake Victoria (left).
In 1920 the protectorate emerged as the crown colony of Kenya, however by 1944, with the formation of the Kenyan African Union, there were growing calls for independence. Between 1952 and 1959 Kenya was placed under a state of emergency following a rebellion by the Mau Mau and the country was finally granted it independence from British rule in 1963.
Whilst the most famous tribe in Kenya is the Massai, the country is home to around forty tribes who make up the country's population of some thirty nine million.
