Harare Airport
Located seven miles south-east of Harare, Harare International airport is both a civil airport and home to the Air Force of Zimbabwe. Until the 1990s it was a popular international airport when many countries were refusing to fly to South Africa however today it is used mainly by African airlines such as Air Malawi, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airlines, South African Airlines amongst a few others including of course, Air Zimbabwe. There are additionally direct flights to London from the airport.
Generally Harare airport is considered a good airport to travel to and from. Unlike many other airports in Africa the staff are polite and courteous and there is no hint that a bribe would help expedite the customs and baggage processes.
Part of this is because the airport is very much under used and built to handle many more flights that it currently caters for, not least because in many ways Zimbabwe is considered a pariah state largely shunned by the international community. Despite this more recent reports indicate that a lack of investment is leading to a deterioration of the airport. The airport is fairly small and by mid evening, around 9.30pm, its pretty much deserted save for some cleaners and a couple of security staff.
