Happy Ethiopian Children

Happy Ethiopian Children

We weren't sure whether to include this short video of happy Ethiopian children, but its so infectious we couldn't resist. After a few moments a little lad notices the camera and is not quite sure what to make of it. See if you can watch the video without smiling; pretty much impossible!

We chose to include this video because when most people think of children in Ethiopia their minds flash back to the chronic famine of 1994-1195 when hundreds of thousands of people in Ethiopia literally starved to death. This famine inspired the Live Aid concert of 1995 and the single, 'Do they Know Its Christmas' which raised over £1 million pounds.

Today the situation is still tough for Ethiopian children with four million orphaned and a further 200,000 becoming orphans every year. 44% of all Ethiopian children grow up in poverty and few of them can expect to see their fiftieth birthday. This, coupled with poor literacy rates and high unemployment, make for a bleak future for most children in Ethiopia.

If you could find just 50p a day to sponsor a child in Ethiopia, maybe another child could find a way to laugh and smile the way this little lad does.
