About the Republic of Congo
The Republic of Congo is often referred to as Congo Brazzaville, after its capital city, to distinguish it from its larger neighbour, the Democratic Republic of Congo and is often associated with ongoing civil wars and military conflicts. www.child-sponsorship.com is politically neutral and is primarily concerned with education about Africa and support for children and young people there by promoting opportunities to make a difference.
However we are showing this video about the Republic of Congo despite the fact it is anything but neutral simply because it offers an insight into the country by one of its disaffected citizens. Congo Brazzaville recently celebrated fifty years of independence from France, and whilst under colonial rule it experienced many difficulties such as the revolt in 1928 over the building of the Congo-Ocean railway which resulted in the death of some seventeen thousand Africans, the country has continued to have an unstable history to this day.
Whilst the Republic of Congo has diminishing oil revenues it should still be a relatively wealthy country, however economic mismanagement has left it with unemployment at over 50% and with over two thirds of its population living on under $2 a day.
With a life expectancy of around 54 years, standards of living have fallen by 40% since independence with corruption being cited as one cause of this deterioration; in May 2009 a French magistrate opened a probe into alleged embezzlement by President Sassou.
